Docklands Event Space gets Green Light

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Approval has been granted for a unique performance and events space in Dublin’s Docklands. Located within The Point Village – between The O2 and The Point Luas (red line) stop – it will have an outdoor stage for open air concerts, an outdoor cinema, weekend markets and a big wheel (similar to that of London’s eye).

Being built out of 116 old multi-coloured shipping containers, developer Harry Crosbie said it was a temporary and low-cost way to open the area to the public rather than leaving it unused during the recession. The site should open at the start of the summer and remain open for four years.

The outdoor market will include over 100 stalls, which will be kept alive and vibrant by introducing a variety of themes and rotating traders, live music, fashion shows, product launches, sports demonstrations, book and comic fairs, vinyl record conventions, antiques shows, art exhibitions, stalls for art and design students to display and sell their work and much more. The developers are hoping to create a Covent Garden style market, which will be modern and vibrant while retaining the old-fashioned market charm.

Samuel Beckett Bridge Opens

Monday, December 14th, 2009

The Samuel Beckett Bridge opened to traffic on Friday 11th December 2009, following its official opening ceremony a day previous. The bridge connects Guild Street on the north side of the city with Sir John Rogerson’s Quay on the south side. The €60 million bridge was designed by internationally renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, who also designed the city’s James Joyce Bridge. The bridge’s steel superstructure was made in Rotterdam and travelled to Dublin on a barge in May 2009. Here it underwent finishing and commissioning work before opening slightly ahead of schedule in December 2009. The 5,700 tonne, 120m long bridge is designed to represent a harp lying on its side. It has four traffic lanes, with cycle tracks and footpaths on either sides, as well as room to accommodate the Luas in the future. It also has the ability to open up through an angle of 90° to allow ships to pass as they move up and down the River Liffey. Motorists are advised that there is no right-turn from the bridge on either side of the river and no left-turn from North Wall Quay onto the north side of the bridge. For traffic arrangements in the vicinity of the Samuel Beckett Bridge, more details are available o the Dublin City website.
